✦ Synopsis
were synthesized for the 5rst time. The 5rst three could be indexed, i.e., Sc 3 BC 3 shows tetragonal symmetry with a ؍ 3.3308(3) A s and c ؍ 7.680(2) A s ; the basic hexagonal unit cell of Sc 2 B 1.1 C 3.2 is a ؍ 3.3991(2) A s , c ؍ 6.7140(6) A s , with a two-dimensional incommensurate structure with magnitude "q i " ؍ (2/7 ؉ 0.005) "q 100 " As ؊1 along 1 11002 2 directions; and ScB 15 C 1.60 shows a body centered orthorhombic lattice a ؍ 10.027(1) A s , b ؍ 8.0138(9) A s and c ؍ 5.6668(6) A s . A crystal of Sc 2 BC 2 was grown by the 6oating zone method and the crystal structure was re5ned from single crystal data, which crystallizes with tetragonal symmetry: I4/mmm, a ؍ 3.3259(2) A s , c ؍ 10.6741(8) A s , Z ؍ 2, R ؍ 0.011 for 263 unique re6ections and 10 variables.
