✦ Synopsis

A new and general synthesis of methyl isoquinoline-3-carboxylates is described starting from aromatic 1,2dialdehydes by reaction with protected phosphonoglycine derivatives. Methyl l-oxo-l,2-dihydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylates are obtained from 2-formylbenzoate derivatives. This new method allows the preparation of isoquinolines having electron-withdrawing groups on the benzene ring.
