Abstract
The importance of vitamin D in maintaining bone health is well established. However, it has recently been suggested that vitamin D might reduce total mortality and reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. This article critically evaluates the evidence for this suggestion and concludes that while there is some experimental support for the suggested effects on total mortality, cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer, the suggested effects on type 2 diabetes and prostate cancer lack serious experimental support. Nevertheless, since many cells have the capacity to produce biologically active vitamin D and respond to it through vitamin D receptors then new roles of vitamin D are likely to emerge in the near future. In the meantime, studies specifically designed to investigate effects of vitamin D on these chronic diseases are needed rather than relying on the results of studies designed for other purposes.

The idea that vitamin D must function at the bone site to promote bone mineralization has long existed since its discovery as an anti-rachitic agent. However, the definite evidence for this is still lacking. In contrast, much evidence has accumulated that 1 c ~, 2 5 ( 0 H ) ~D ~ is involved in bone
mist of sulphuric acid and prevents its escape. After digestion has been completed, the tube may be washed with water to recover any traces of ammonium salts which have been carried into it with the spray. The inventors describe the device as simple, cleanly, convenient, inexpensive, and efficient.
## Abstract 1,25 Dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)~2~D) regulates the differentiation of keratinocytes. 1,25(OH)~2~D raises intracellular free calcium (Cai) as a necessary early step toward stimulating differentiation. 1,25(OH)~2~D induces the calcium sensing receptor (CaR) in keratinocytes and enhances
