✦ Synopsis

the risk of vision loss in chemical injuries

C

hemicals that are toxic to the eye are found in homes, on ~farms, in laboratories, and at industrial sites. Use of these chemicals may present a true ocular emergency. Chemical injuries of the eye may produce extensive damage to the external surfaces of the eyelids and eyeballs, as well as internal damage of the anterior segment of the eye in the cases of alkali and hydrofluoric acid. An adequate prevention program should limit injuries significantly; 90Β°/o of eye injuries are preventable.
