✦ Synopsis
New methods are described for making fl-alumina of high purity and of conductance 0 .1 R -' cm -' at -,57010 UN-IRODUCTrON #-alumina is a solid electrolyte close in composition to Na 2 0 . 11A1 2 0 3 and a cation conductor due to the migration of Na* . Impermeable to gases and liquids,it is a good material for the construction of cells, especially those to be operated at highertemperatures, eg the sodium-sulphur cell . The conductance of fl-AI,O, increases with temperature . At 300°C, it is 3 x 10 -' fl-' cm -' for the single crystal[l], -0 .35 x 10 -'m -' for polycrystalline sinters[2], and 1 .1 x 10`11' cm -' if Y,O 3 and MgO are added
