β¦ Synopsis
Solvay started up its first plant for making epichlorhydrin (Epicerol) in Tavaux in France. The plant processes 10,000 tonne/y of glycerine obtained from rapeseed oil. Solvay plans to build another 100,000 tonne/y plant in Thailand which is scheduled to come on-stream in mid-2009. The process developed by Solvay is based on the direct synthesis of dichloropropanol from glycerine and hydrogen chloride. In a second stage the epichlorhydrin is created by the dehydrochlorination of dichloropropanol.
