(c) The formed acidic OH groups of the catalyst surface are blocked by pyridine that may lead to an easier desorption of the products. Beside catalyst properties, also different substituent effects play an important role for chemisorption. For example, the addition of pyridine to the p-chlorotoluene reaction feed does not enhance aldehyde selectivity, otherwise, pyridine addition to p-methoxytoluene oxidation results in drastically increased aldehyde selectivity.
