By using the solutions of an auxiliary ordinary differential equation, a direct algebraic method is described to construct the exact solutions for nonlinear evolution equations. By this method two generalized Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV systems are investigated and new exact solutions are explicitly obtained with the aid of symbolic computation.
