"Format" is a much abused word, at least in the upstart intruder in the new A4 format. What right or experience of one time-expired editor, whose first reason exists for this disturbance of a settled and significant contact with the word was when he was familiar medium from which our minds have absorbed floundering in a fog of editorial amateurism in an so much of value in forensic science? attempt to produce the first issue of the Journal of the Forensic Science Society. The manager of our newly appointed Society printers had explained to him that a decision needed to be made on which format to adopt for the Journal. "Format?" said our raw and callow editor, "what's that?" The printer, a patient and kindly man, explained that it simply meant "the size and shape of a book". To clarify his point he then produced a number of specimen periodicals to illustrate the available formats which were available. These were of a bewildering variety, both of absolute sizes and of relative lengths and breadths.
