European p u m p users and manufacturers have requested that a specific European standard f o r p u m p s be added to the regulations governing safety and hygiene of equipment used in the f o o d industry. In response, a team of p u m p manufacturers has just proposed a draft standard to address the issue, entitled "Liquid p u m p s -Safety requirements -Agrtfoodstuffs equipment; Design rules to ensure hygiene in use" (prEN 197-042).

The p u r p o s e of this standard is to help p r o c e s s designers and p u m p manufacturers c o m p l y with European requirements, including the machines directive and the hygiene directive.The p r o p o s e d standard deals w i t h all aspects of hygiene riskw h e t h e r biological, m e c h a n i c a l or chemical.
