Abstract
New absorption centers giving bands with maxima at 555 nm (Y) and 625 nm (Yβ²) at liquidβnitrogen temperature, were observed in OHβcontaining KCl single crystals annealed in vacuum a t 600 Β°C and subsequently uv irradiated. The thermal bleaching of these bands yields F centers. Optical bleaching of Yβ² yields increase of intensity of Y and F bands and vice versa. The Y and Yβ² centers can be converted into F centers by compressing the crystal. This reaction is accompanied by emission of 460 nm light. Study of the effect of ambient atmospheres upon formation of these centers suggests the involvement of oxygen molecule ions present in the crystals.
