This book collects the papers from a symposium held in Japan on 26-30 May 1997. The meeting brought together scientists from Japan and the United States to discuss ways to reduce the impact of pesticides employed in agriculture, urban settings and in the public health arena. The topics for the meeting included epidemiology, chronic effects of pesticides on health, safer pesticides with new modes of action, bioremediation of pesticides, biochemical/molecular biology of pesticides and the dynamics and ecology of pesticides in the environment. Each of the meeting topics had a plenary lecture. The overall goal for the meeting through discussion of these areas was to provide novel strategies for the future direction of pesticide research. Hopefully, these strategies will reduce the impact of newer pesticides on environmental and human health.
