β¦ Synopsis
Amorphous AI-La-M and AI-Zr-M (M = Ni or Cu) alloys exhibiting a significant temperature region of supercooled liquid state and a high reduced glass transition temperature ( TJ Tin) were formed over wide composition ranges by melt spinning. The temperature span A Z,( = Tx -Tg) reaches as large as 70 to 80 K around AILa2M and A1Zr3M. The Tg/T m is also as high as 0.6 to 0.7 around their compositions and the AI-La-M and AI-Zr-M alloys are concluded to have a large glass-forming capacity. The high thermal stability of the supercooled liquid in the vicinity of A1La2M and A1Zr3M seems to result from optimum bonding and packing states of the constituent atoms in the limited alloys.
