## Abstract A nonchloric method for the synthesis of phosphorous acid and barium and calcium phosphites is proposed, involving the reaction of elemental phosphorus (P~4~) with aqueous barium and calcium hydroxides in the presence of quaternary ammonium base (choline). Conditions for the preparation
New alkane functionalization reactions based on gif-type chemistry in the presence of alkali metal salts.

Cycloalkanes are transformed into monosubstitute cycloalkyl derivatives (chloride, azide, cyanide, thiocyanate, dicycloalkyi disutide, or nitroalkane) in mo+y good etEiciencies by treatment with tert-butyl hydropemxide in pyrirlm&cetic acid containing Fe(NO&.9H20, in the presence of alkali metal salts (LiCl, NaN~,[Et@JCN, NaSCN, Na$, or NaNOz, respectively). In comparison, ionic trapping with Cu(OAc)z gave efficient trapping with chloride ion, very inefficient capture of thiocyanate, and a significant diierence in reactivity towards azide ion.
