✦ Synopsis
Neutron powder diffraction was used to investigate the evolution of the structural distortion with temperature in a series of a-quartz isotypes. Although this information related to the average structure places an upper temperature limit for applications, degradation of piezoelectric properties, particularly the Q factor, may occur at significantly lower temperatures. This gradual loss of piezoelectric response in a-quartz, for example, can be linked to the increase in structural disorder found in total neutron scattering results, which indicate that between 473 and 673 K, the local disorder in the instantaneous structure of a-quartz becomes comparable to that of b-quartz. Preliminary total scattering measurements from the a-quartz isotype, GaPO 4 , which is particularly promising for high-temperature applications, indicate that this material is particularly stable at high temperature.
