✦ Synopsis
deaths in children younger than 4 declined by greater than 50%. Of the 81 children younger than 4 years who died in Tennessee traffic accidents during this time, only two were wearing child restraint devices. Analysis of the accident report data revealed that child restraint devices were highly effective both in preventing death and in preventing or reducing injury. There was an ll-fold greater risk of dying in an accident for children who were not in restraining devices compared to those who were. Children traveling in the arms of an adult had a risk of death or injury which was comparable to that of children left entirely unrestrained.
