This paper identifies and places in context the acronyms associated with the exchange of product definition data generated by CADCAM systems. Having identified those which are neutral formats for the representation of such data, it is worthwhile to trace the evolution of ICES and its successors. Because the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (ICES) is the current de facto standard neutral format, the mechanisms for realising its real potential in the period until a replacement becomes available are elaborated.
