✦ Synopsis
Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) (SPECT, IssXenon) was measured in the left and right primary cortical motor areas (PMA) and in the supplementary motor areas (SMA) of 24 normal subjects at rest and during a right sequential finger to thumb opposition motor task. The performance of the task was quantified (using videotapes) in term of frequency (F = number of oppositions/min) and amplitude (A) (according to a 0-3 scale).
12 subjects (group 1) performed the task with high frequency (F = 60f20/min) and large amplitude (A = 3) while the 12 others (group 2) performed it with a lower frequency (33Wmin) and a smaller amplitude (1.7k0.5) (p<0.05). The motor task induced a significant increase of rCBF in the SMA and contralateral PMA (cPMA) of both groups but this increase was larger in group 1 (cPMA = +13f8%, SMA = +7f5%) than in group 2 (cPMA = +9*4%, SMA = +4f4%) (p<0.05). These results suggest that differences in the frequency and execution of the same complex motor task can modify the activation of the cPMA and SMA.
