✦ Synopsis

Periventricular hyperintensities (PVH) in T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have recently been reported to occur twice as often in patients with Alzheimer's disease as in healthy subjects, but the significance o f these abnormalities and of white matter changes distinct from the ventricles (leuko-araiosis) is still unclear, particularly in neurodegenerative disorders. With this in mind, we performed cranial MRI ( 0 . 5 T ) on 53 IPD patients and 34 age-matched, healthy controls, all of whom were free of cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive deficits, The prevalence and severity of PVH was significantly higher in IPD patients than in healthy subjects. Moreover IPD patients with PVH show an accelerated disease progression. These results suggest that periventricular white matter abnormalities have some relation to the disease process in IPD -P461
