Arbitrary flow networks with identical linear dynamic mixing characteristics at the nodes may be replaced by an equivalent parallel-series arrangement. The dynamic response is a weighted sum of the individual series responses.

Treating the process in matrix terms removes the need for the nodes to have identical characteristics.
