โœฆ Synopsis

The tumour-promoting phorbol ester 12-0tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) interfers with nerve cell production in Hydra when applied to the animals' culture medium. Precursor cells exposed to 0.2 nM TPA during the first half of their S-phase are prevented from differentiating into nerve cells. Precursor cells which start their S-phase following a treatment with TPA give rise to nerve cells. The frequency is higher than in untreated control animals.

LiCl, a well-known vegetalising agent, interferes with the commitment of stem cells to nerve cells and nematocytes in Hydra attenuata. Treatment with 20 mM LiCl inhibits commitment to nerve cells, treatment with 1 mM LiCl inhibits commitment to nematocytes. However, LiCl does not prevent stem cells

In both the normal and malignant human breast, cellular sensitivity to the proliferative and differentiative activities of the lactogenic hormones i s conferred by expression of the prolactin receptor (PRLR). The PRLR is regulated by steroid hormones; however, recent findings have suggested that PRL
