✦ Synopsis
Blackwell Scientific Publications Ltd. 35s. THIS is a fascinating book, full of past surgical history and told in a vivid and interesting style.
There can be no doubt that the story of stone in the bladder is among the longest in medical history, since this condition was the first to be treated by an elective surgical procedure.
Professor Ellis tells the story of many famous patients who over the centuries had suffered from stone in the bladder; to mention only a few, King Leopold I of Belgium, Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon 111, and Samuel Pepys.
The various operative procedures that in the past have been used to remove stones from the bladder are well described and illustrated.
An excellent production and full of interest to the medical profession.
In spite of the fact that the author in his preface considers himself to be an amateur medical historian, we sincerely hope that we shall receive more books of this style and character from his pen.
