β¦ Synopsis
The results of follow-up examinations of eleven patients with neonatal hepatitis are reported. In ten children the acute phase of the disease had occurred two to seven years, and in one child three months prior to the reexamination. Clinical and biochemical studies were normal in nine of the eleven eases. One boy, now eight years of age, had a hepatosplenomegaly, a slight elevation of GOT and LAP activity, of the serum concentration of bile acids, and a pathological BSP excretion. The histological picture of the liver (pereutaneous needle biopsy) showed no definite pathological changes. A second boy, now seven and one half year old, showed a slight elevation of the serum bilirubin concentration and a pathological BSP excretion. The liver biopsy of this child showed no characteristic changes of the parenehyma and a slight fibrosis. The first of the two patients developed the chronic state of the liver disease immediately after the acute phase; in the second patient there was an interval of unknown duration. The favourable prognosis of neonatal hepatitis in these patients is probably connected to the fact that a diagnostic laparotomy was avoided during the acute phase of the disease.
