The mass distributions of ahnninum negative cluster ions and their binary cluster ions mixed with a carbon atom, generated by laser vaporization, were measured. In the range from n= 5 to 70, the mass distribution of pure aluminum negative cluster ions, Al;, exhibits one peak at n= 13 and one step be

β¦ Synopsis
An experimental technique that produces, mass-resolves, and isolates both positive ond negarive clusier ions is described. Cluster ions of from 1 LO greater than 50 atoms have been observed in carbon and silicon. This apparatus does rwr cnnverr neural clusrcrs 10 ions via a secondary ionizing agent (e.g., laser phoroionizarion or electron-impact ionizarion), bur rather produces the cluster ions direcdy. Measurements of relaiive abundances of both posirive and negative clusters ("magic numbers") in carbon and silicon are presenied. These results are compared IO rhose obiained with conveniional neutral clusrer laser phoroionizalion methods. and LO spectra obtained using pholofragmenlation speclroswpy.

Positive and negative cluster ions in methanol have been examined using a direct fast atom bombardment (FAB) probe technique. Positive ion (CH,OH),H+ clusters with n = 1-28 have been observed and their clusters are the dominant ions in the low-mass region. Cluster-ion reaction products (CH,OH),(H,O)
Positively and negatively charged cluster ions were produced from methanol and ethanol samples under low temperature secondary ion mass spectrometric conditions. Neat alcohol clusters [M n . H + ], [M n -H] -and mixed alcohol-water cluster sets [M n . (H 2 O) m . H + ] and [M n . (H 2 O) m -H] -sets
