✦ Synopsis

Detailed balancing will not generally obtain in a mass action system unless the rate constants are suitably well orchestrated. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions are given for detailed balancing in mass action systems of arbitrary complexity. 'We are all students of Rutherford Arts. If we cannot aspire to his scholarship, grace or kindness, we are nevertheless uplifted by having learned what is possible. This article is dedicated to Rutherford Aris on the occasion of his 60th birthday. 'All three of the complex balancing articles were communi-* Here I am referring to the variety of equilibria that can be cated to the Archivesfor Rational Mechanics and Analysis by Rutherford Ark obtained, for example, by varying the initial charge in a batch reactor.

By extending Darboux method to three dimension, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic orbits in three species Lotka-Volterra systems with the same intrinsic growth rates. Therefore, all the published sufficient or necessary conditions for the existence of perio
