✦ Synopsis

A mixture of eight barley varieties was harvested in 4 parts at 10-day intervals. The 4 seed mixtures were sown the following year and harvested at the same time as in the previous year. The experiment continued thus for 4 more years. Also monocultures of the varieties were sown yearly and harvested in 4 parts at the dates the mixtures were reaped.

The harvest date influenced the survival of most of the varieties. For some varieties this could be explained by their pattern of yield for different harvest dates in monoculture, for other varieties by various reasons. The influence of the harvest date was not so strong as to change the rank order in frequency of the varieties.
