โฆ Synopsis
This paper outlines the structure of the CG System, a network of International Agricultural Research Centres, arguing that it is characterized by a particular commodity-based way of organizing research. This approach increased output of the target commodities but is less responsive to the complex, interdisciplinary problems that arise in environmental research. However, the CG system is under sustained pressure to produce research results that will improve the management of natural resources. It is argued that a new research practice will be necessary to achieve this, and that new patterns of management are required for such transdisciplinary research to be conducted eectively. The article concludes by describing a research project that represents a serious attempt to practice the research model advocated.
