This paper presents an introductory review of some aspects of the computer processing of natural language (especially English) m an orthographic form (that is, m the form of a string of alphabetic characters, rather than for example, spoken word). Apphcatlons of such processmg m fields hke information storage and retrieval and computer-assisted instruction are discussed, and the question of what ~t means for a computer to "understand" natural language is considered. Some of the problems m analysing the structure and content of Enghsh sentences are presented, along with some solutions to these problems which have been investigated experimentally
