✦ Synopsis

upport for research and control of cancer remains high both with S the public-at-large and within Congress. This is evidenced by the results of repeated polls and repeated reauthorization of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) appropriations. However, the world has changed since 1971 and many concerns are being raised, both at the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the NCI, on how best to proceed in the war on cancer. Before discussing some of these concerns, it may be useful to briefly describe some aspects of the ACS and NCI that impact on the relationship between them.
