W

hile various professional organizations in the health care industry promulgate isolated initiatives to support patient safety, the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management is taking a comprehensive approach.

This year, ASHRM's Board of Directors established the National Advisory Council on Patient Safety (the "Council"), comprising thought leaders of diverse backgrounds who share ASHRM's dedication to creating and sustaining a culture of safety in health care. These leaders were given a three-fold charge:

  1. Define risk management's role in the culture of safety; 2. Develop patient safety strategies for risk managers to apply --and --3. Identify leading edge opportunities to advance the role of risk management in patient safety.
