โฆ Synopsis
The significance of community psychology in part resides in its capacity to develop adventuresome perspectives and methods which have the potential to enhance the well-being of individuals and communities. The set of articles on narrative concepts and spiritually based communities comprising this special section of the Journal of Community Psychology exemplifies such an adventuresome approach. The authors of the studies reported herein apply qualitative research methods to examine the importance of stories and storytelling at multiple levels of analysis-an approach to qualitative research and the study of setting culture and process which has too rarely guided community psychology research. Furthermore, the authors apply this narrative approach to spiritually-based communities-settings which are extremely important in the lives of many Americans and about which we understand relatively little. Our field will benefit from building upon these initial, narrative studies of spiritually-based communities, and extending the narrative approach to other community contexts of significance as well. In an effort to encourage future efforts, I will first comment on the strengths of the current adventuresome foray and then discuss areas in need of future development.
