Hjalmar Johansen havner bogstavelig talt i lykkens favn, da han får hyre på skibet "Fram" og optages som medlem af den store nordpolsekspedition, anført af Fritjof Nansen. Johansen drømmer om eventyret, om noget større, om den vidunderlige forløsning.
