10 addition to saving the average homeowner hundreds of euros a year, the unit can meter excess electricity back to the grid, and in the long term, could be connected to a system using solar or wind energy, to create a hybrid unit.

Acumentrics' CHP units have passed initial qualification in Japan as safe for home cogeneration use, and safety testing has begun at the US National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST). Additional units are scheduled to be provided to a university in Italy for field evaluation. MTS will use its experience in heating and water-heating domestic products to incorporate the CHP system into a wall-hung boiler of a size suitable for the European market.

The Acumentrics-MTS collaboration to jointly develop SOFC-based CHP appliances for the European heating market was announced two years ago [FCB, October 2005], as a threeto-four year development, testing and commercial ization process.
