β¦ Synopsis
Non-cxponcntial decay of fluorescence from low pressure vapours of styrenc, alkyl styrenes and indcne, following cxcitation in the intense *La ('Al -'Al) band have been observed using a conventional single-photon-counting tcchnjquc. Time rcsolvcd emissicn spectra, using a frequency doubled, cavity dumped Ar+ laser (A excitation = 257.25 nm), have r* vedlcd the prcscncc of two cmrtting states. One of thcsc statcs is charactcrircd by an unusually lam: lifetime. Suzgcstions as to the nature of both the short and long-hvcd cmittinp states YC put forward.
