✦ Synopsis

A compact nanosecond pulse neutron generator based on the collective acceleration of laser-produced deuterons by a relativistic electron beam has been designed and examined. The average D-Be and D-D neutron outputs were about 109 and 8 Γ— 108 neutrons per second, respectively. The duration of the neutron pulse was about 10 ns in both cases. The device was operated at 16 Hz.
