โฆ Synopsis
Jul 1981
Many Americans are returning to wood heating of their homes. In 1979 at least 100,000 hydraulic woodsplitters were purchased and in 1980 an estimated 2,200 injuries from such machines occurred. Hand injuries were seen almost exclusively in the series of 23 patients reviewed. Central digit injuries and particularly digit amputations were the most common serious injuries. Design of the woodsplitting machine, as well as operation by more than a single person, were felt to be primarily responsible for most injuries. The authors note that this labor-saving machine requires more attention to design safety, particularly as use of wood heat and consequent hand injuries increase. [Editor's note: It is of interest that many of these injuries occurred during two-man operation: one man triggering the activating switch before the loader could remove his hand. So much for friendly help.
