The structure of the phenanthroline-derived viologen, C 26 H 22 N 2 2+ Á2Br À ÁCH 3 OH, as the methanol solvate, was determined as part of a ¯uorescence-quenching study. There is intermolecular %±% stacking of the phenanthroline and benzyl arms as well as methanol hydrogen bonding to a bromide.
