✦ Synopsis
The Miissbauer spectra of iron and cobalt fluoroborate hexahydrate show a change by a factor of two in the quadrupole interaction near 2%) K and 185 K, respectively, togtther with a sudden drop in resonance fraction. This behaviour is explained as a first order phase transition in which the axial parameter of the crystalline electric field changes in sign and magnitude.
