✦ Synopsis

Magnetometry and "'ELI and "Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements of Eu(Pd,_,Fe,),Si, have been performed. Low amounts of iron (3%) are enough to stabilize the divalent valence of Eu below 85 K in spite of the fact that in EuFe,Si, the europium is trivalent. The Fe enters predominantly the Pd site but also the Si site (25%). It is concluded that the presence of Si in the Pd site is most effective in driving the Eu to become divalent. This is also confirmed by measurements of the properties of EuPd, ,Si, , and EuPd, ,Si, 9.
