Renversée puis écrasée à trois reprises par la même voiture. Telle est la fin sanglante d'Eugenie Davies, discrète sexagénaire habitant la paisible bourgade de Henley-on-Thames. Derrière le quotidien monotone de Mrs Davies, l'inspecteur Thomas Lynley et son acolyte Barbara Havers ne tardent pas à découvrir un passé lourd de secrets : une petite fille assassinée par sa nourrice ; un départ inattendu du foyer conjugal ; un fils, violoniste virtuose, définitivement abandonné.
