This book, about two young friends, Gary and Tuck, who hike into the mountains every chance they get to look for a lost gold mine and the treasure that legend says was lost along with it, had me absolutely spellbound when I was a child. It comes with everything a kid (or an adult who's young at heart) could want: secret symbols on canyon walls, ever-changing canyons filled with miners' artifacts, a crazy Apache killer the locals call Assesino, a dog, shotguns, rifles, a motorcycle, a lot of crazy locals and empty cans of Alberta peaches scattered across the wilderness. Will the kids find the lost treasure or get a bullet in the head? What do those strange symbols mean? And is there really a lost treasure left behind? It's just a wonderful little book of fantasy -- two teenage boys left alone for a weekend by their parents grab their car and their dog and set out to look for a treasure, an Apache killer hot on their trail.
