yelin is a multi-lamellar membrane that is uniquely found in the nervous system. When myelin sheaths are not properly formed or are destroyed as a result of acquired or inherited diseases, the end result is a disruption of the normal propagation of electrical impulses down the nerves resulting in sensory and motor symptoms. In this review, the structure and functions of myelin, the cells that form the myelin sheaths, and diseases that affect the formation of the sheath will be discussed.
