Elevated levels of cAMP are essential for the expression of many postaggregation prespore and prestalk mRNA species and for the suppression of some growth phase mRNAs. Here we review evidence that this regulation is mediated by cAMP interacting at the cell surface receptor. These effects of cAMP on
