Abstract

The Salmonella/microsome test and the chick embryo test were used to determine the mutagenicity and toxicity of five aflatoxin B~1~ precursors. A definite pattern emerges: the nearer to B~1~ an intermediate appears in the biosynthetic pathway, the more potent is its mutagenicity and toxicity.
