It wnsfound in the mains nnd n t the top of the condenser through which the mixture of chlorine nnd undrcomposed h drochloric acid from the decomposer trnrcls. and its Lrmation is t o be nscribcd to the nction of the chlorine in the gnses on the tarry matters in tlie pipes, hexaclilorobcnzenc being thc finnl product of chlorinntion of aromatic substances. Confirmntion of this view is t o be found in the fnct that, so far as I cnn nscertnin, the product is mostly found in new mnges of pipes or i n repsired lengths where freshly tarred pipes nre introduced.
