Richard Delaney, the flirtatious mayor of Lancashire, invites Samantha Degan and her fiancè, Detective Joseph Fletcher to a  performance of The Music Man.  The musical  is presented by local actors and stars the wife of the mayor, Sophia Delaney.  Samantha is drawn into another murder mystery when the mayor is shot during the finale of the show and his head falls on Samantha's lap in the crowded theater.   The bullet is precise in hitting its target and points to a possible murder-for-hire.  The suspects are many as Samantha and Fletch investigate the many reasons  why they all wanted Mayor Delaney dead.
