✦ Synopsis

Total disappearance rates of negative muons brought to rest in 30 elements have been measured to 1-2 % precision. The experimental procedure and the results obtained are presented. In addition, a compilation of all measurements of muon capture rates in complex nuclei as presently known is given, and several analytical fits to these rates are discussed.
