โฆ Synopsis
By the creator of Mike Shayne.
Jerry Burke had been hired to clean up crime in El Paso.
He was challenged when the newspaper ad promised to kill a man at 11:40 p.m. and taunted about doing something about it. It was signed Mum.
A rich man was shot dead and it was learned by a competing cop that the man was about to change his will, cutting out the son.
Then a second ad promised a woman would be murdered, gave the time and location, in Juarez, and was signed with Mum again. The ad made fun of Burke for screwing up the first murder.
Same deal, even though cops were everywhere. The woman was knifed to death.
Then came the third murder ad. Mum really gave Burke a hard time and promised he wouldn't be able to stop it either.
The plot solution, used here in 1939, predates a much more famous use of the same set-up.
