✦ Synopsis
MUMPS was designed more than a decade ago to provide interactive data management capabilities on small-scale computers. As a result of developments and trends in system architecture, hardware costs and software capabilities since that time, a re-evaluation of the initial design criteria is now warranted. Language enrichment, compilation and/or preprocessing, and functional integration into general purpose environments are the major characteristics to be expected in the evolution of MUMPS systems.
