✦ Synopsis
We describe methods to obtain two or more simultaneous, quantitative planar images of scalars in turbulent flames. The simplest technique employs a single laser system and one CCD camera for Rayeigh scattering and LIF collection from fuel or the OH radical. More complex arrangements involve two lasers and a separate camera for each scalar. A two-scalar approach for obtaining mixture fraction images is described and implemented with simultaneous Rayleigh and fuel LIF measurements in an acetaldehyde/air turbulent jet diffusion flame. Some 2D images of mixture fraction and scalar dissipation are presented, with a discussion of difficulties, variations, and future extensions of the method. Some quantitative images of OH and temperature are presented for a turbulent natural gas-hydrogen diffusion flame. With this fuel mixture, the Rayleigh data can be interpreted as temperature. The OH is obtained from a fluorescence signal and corrected for ground-state population fraction and quenching with the aid of the Rayleigh data.
